Some almanacs even include weather forecasts for the coming days. They help people feel ready for the world around them.

These books work by organizing data into tables. They often follow the calendar to show events. You might find the times when the Sun and Moon rise or set. They also list the dates of eclipses and religious festivals.

In ancient Egypt, people watched the star Sirius to predict Nile floods. The Greeks used a stone called a parapegma to track the month. This stone had movable pegs in holes to show the days. Later, the first modern almanac was written in 1088 by Arzachel in Toledo. He provided the daily positions of the sun and moon.

Printing changed how people read these books. In 1457, Gutenberg published the first printed almanac in Mainz. By the 1600s, almanacs were huge bestsellers in England. They were almost as popular as the Bible.
