He was born in Glasgow, Scotland, on August 21, 1819. After his father died, he left school at age ten. He taught himself many things by reading a lot of books. Before he was a detective, he worked as a cooper making wooden barrels. He eventually moved to America to find a new life in Chicago.

Pinkerton became a detective after he spotted a group of counterfeiters in the woods. He watched them and then told the local sheriff. This success helped him become the first police detective in Cook County, Illinois, in 1849. In 1850, he started the Pinkerton National Detective Agency. His agency used a logo of a wide open eye. The caption said, "We never sleep."

He even hired Kate Warne, who was the first female detective.

During the American Civil War, Pinkerton played a very important role. He led the Union Intelligence Service for the first two years of the war. He helped protect Abraham Lincoln while the president-elect traveled to Washington, D.C. Pinkerton also went undercover as a soldier to find enemy plans. He used the name Major E.J. Allen to hide his true identity. He even traveled through the Deep South to study enemy forts.

Some people disagree about how well Pinkerton did his job during the war. He gave reports to General George B. McClellan about how many enemy soldiers there were. Some historians say his numbers were much too high. They believe these wrong numbers made the General too afraid to attack. Other historians think the General was the one who made the numbers too big.

After the war, Pinkerton continued to chase famous outlaws like Jesse James. He also worked for the Spanish government in 1872 to help in Cuba. Pinkerton died in Chicago on July 1, 1884. Some reports say he died from a stroke or malaria. He is buried in Graceland Cemetery next to his wife and Kate Warne.
