Alonso was known for being a very dramatic dancer. She was also a master of technique and classical dance styles. Her talent helped her become a star on stages across the globe.

Dancing was a hard job for Alicia because of her eyes. At age nineteen, she became partially blind due to a detached retina. She had several surgeries to try to fix her vision. After the operations, she had no peripheral vision, which is the sight on the sides. To keep dancing, she used clever ways to find her way. She used bright, colored spotlights on the stage to guide her movements. If she saw a certain glow, she knew where she was. She also trained her dance partners to stand in exact spots. They would lead her from one point to another so the audience never knew she could not see well.

Alicia's journey began in Havana, Cuba, in 1920. She was the fourth child of a veterinarian and a dressmaker. When she was nine, her family moved to Spain for a year and a half. There, she learned Spanish dances like the Jota and Sevillanas. She returned to Cuba in 1931 to study ballet in Havana. Her first public performance was in 1931 when she was only eleven years old. By 1932, she was already performing in big shows like Sleeping Beauty.

In 1943, Alicia moved to New York City to rebuild her skills. She soon became a star after dancing the role of Giselle for the Ballet Theatre.

In 1948, she returned to Havana to start her own company. This group eventually became the Ballet Nacional de Cuba. She even opened a ballet academy to train many Cuban dancers. Her company grew very strong and won many international competitions. She traveled to many places, including the Soviet Union, to dance with famous theaters.

Alicia Alonso left a huge mark on the world of dance. She was a leader who taught many famous dancers in Cuba and beyond. Her life was even the subject of a documentary film called Horizontes. She continued to dance and lead her company well into her 70s. Even as she grew older, she remained a very important figure in ballet. She passed away in Havana in 2019 at the age of 98. She is remembered for her passion and her great skill on the stage.
