While he was trained as an astronomer, his heart was in the weather. He wanted to understand how air moves and how the climate changes. At first, most geology experts did not accept his theory. It took until the 1950s for scientists to find enough proof. He went on four different expeditions to study the Arctic. During his first trip in 1906, he built a weather station. He used kites and balloons to measure the air. In his second trip from 1912 to 1913, he and Johan Peter Koch became the first people to spend a winter on the inland ice. They even drilled a hole 25 meters deep into the ice. They had a hard journey and almost ran out of food. They were eventually rescued by a clergyman near a fjord.

Aside from the continents, Wegener was a leader in studying storms. He studied tornadoes and wrote about how they form. He also worked on paleoclimatology, which is the study of past climates. He wanted to know what the weather was like millions of years ago. In 1917, he even looked into a meteorite named Treysa. He worked with many people, including his father-in-law, Wladimir Köppen. Wegener was known for explaining very hard topics in a way that was easy to understand. This helped his students learn much more clearly.

Wegener's final journey took place in 1930.

He led a team of 14 people to Greenland. They wanted to measure how thick the ice sheet was. They even used new propeller-driven snowmobiles to travel. However, the trip fell six weeks behind schedule because of a late thaw. Wegener went out on a dog sled to help supply a camp. Sadly, he died in the cold during this trip. Even though he died, his ideas changed how we see the Earth.

Wegener's academic journey began at the Friedrich Wilhelm University in Berlin. He studied physics, meteorology, and astronomy. His teachers included the famous physicist Max Planck, who taught him about thermodynamics. Planck's work in thermodynamics is the study of heat and energy. Wegener completed his doctoral dissertation in 1905, focusing on astronomical data. Although he earned a doctorate in astronomy, he focused his career on meteorology and climatology. He wanted to connect different sciences, like geophysics and geology, to understand the whole planet.

In 1912, Wegener presented his first formal proposal for continental drift. He argued that the continents were not fixed in place. He presented this idea to the Geologische Vereinigung in Frankfurt am Main. Later that year, he published a long article to explain his theory. At the time, most geologists rejected his ideas. They did not have a mechanism to explain how continents could move. It was not until the 1950s that scientists discovered palaeomagnetism. This is the study of the record of the Earth's magnetic field in rocks. This discovery provided the evidence needed to support his ideas. This eventually led to the modern model of plate tectonics.

Wegener was a dedicated explorer of the Arctic. He participated in four major expeditions to Greenland. During his first trip in 1906, he built the first meteorological station in Greenland.
