Köppen's scientific journey began in St. Petersburg, Russia. He lived there until he was 20 years old. His family had deep roots in science and medicine. His father, Peter von Köppen, was a famous geographer and historian. Wladimir traveled frequently to his family estate in Crimea. The diverse plants and changing landscapes in Crimea sparked his curiosity. He began studying botany at the University of St. Petersburg in 1864. Later, he moved to the University of Heidelberg in 1867.
Throughout his career, Köppen was a very active researcher. He contributed to sailing handbooks by studying ship reports on ocean winds. Between 1872 and 1873, he worked with the Russian meteorological service. He helped prepare daily synoptic weather maps. In 1875, he moved to Germany to lead a division at the German Maritime Observatory. There, he helped establish weather forecasting for northwestern Germany. He even used balloons to study the upper atmosphere. He called this specific study of the high air "aerology." 
Köppen also collaborated with other famous scientists. In 1924, he and his son-in-law, Alfred Wegener, published a paper. This work provided support for the Milanković theory regarding ice ages. He also co-wrote a popular textbook in 1911 about the thermodynamics of the atmosphere. Later in life, he worked with Rudolf Geiger on a massive handbook of climatology. Although the five-volume work was never finished, Köppen wrote three of the parts. He was an incredibly productive man who wrote more than 500 scientific papers.
Beyond his weather research, Köppen cared about the world around him. He helped create the first cloud atlas in 1890. He also spent time working on social issues like nutrition and school reform. He was a strong supporter of Esperanto. He believed this language could help promote world peace. He even translated his own scientific papers into Esperanto to share his ideas.
Today, we see Köppen's legacy in almost every geography textbook. His maps help us understand how climate shapes the life on our planet. By connecting temperature and rainfall to the plants that grow there, he gave us a tool to read the Earth. His life was a continuous cycle of observation, experimentation, and improvement. He remained a curious scholar until he passed away on 22 June 1940.
