Alfalfa is a special flowering plant that helps many living things grow.

It is a perennial, which means it can live for many years. Some plants live only one season, but alfalfa can live for four to eight years. Some even live for more than 20 years! People call it lucerne in places like Australia and the United Kingdom. It is famous for being a high-quality food for animals. Dairy cows, horses, sheep, and goats all love to eat it.

Growing alfalfa involves some very clever nature tricks. The plant has a tough "crown" at the top of its roots. This crown has tiny buds that let the plant regrow after it is eaten or cut. The roots are also very deep and strong. They can grow about 6 feet deep in loose soil each year. This helps the plant reach water deep underground during dry times. Alfalfa also works with tiny living things called rhizobia. These bacteria live in little bumps on the roots called nodules. The bacteria take nitrogen from the air and turn it into food for the plant. In return, the plant gives the bacteria energy.

This plant has a very long history with humans. It likely started in south-central Asia. A writer named Pliny said it arrived in Greece around 490 BC. This happened when the Persians invaded Greek lands. Later, a writer named Palladius wrote about it in the fourth century AD. He said one field could feed three horses for a whole year! In the 16th century, Spanish colonists brought it to the Americas for their horses. In the 1850s, people brought seeds from Chile to California. This helped the plant spread quickly across the western United States.

Farmers use many tools to harvest this crop.

They often cut the plants to make hay or silage. A machine called a mower-conditioner can help the stems break so they dry faster. Once the plant is dry, a tractor pulls a baler to pack it.

You might see small square bales that are easy to carry. You might also see huge round bales that are very heavy.

These different sizes help farmers store and move the food easily. In very warm places like Arizona, farmers might harvest the crop 12 times a year!

Alfalfa is much more than just animal food. It is also helpful for the soil and other crops. It is an "insectary plant," which means it provides a home for helpful insects. These insects can protect other crops, like cotton, from pests. However, farmers must be careful when mowing. If they mow the whole field at once, they might lose those helpful insects. People also use alfalfa in interesting ways in their own diets. You can find alfalfa sprouts in salads or sandwiches. Some people even take alfalfa as a supplement in powders or tea.
