It sits southeast of the capital city, Riyadh. The area is quite large, covering 19,790 square kilometers. About 376,325 people live in this region according to 2010 statistics. The city of Al-Saih is the main center for the area. It acts as the capital for business and government. This city is a busy place for many people.

This land is famous for its many natural water sources. There are many valleys like Hanifa, Haniyeh, and Al-Sahba. Al-Kharj is also known for its "eyes." These are natural springs that are cavities in the earth. The water in these eyes is cold during the summer. It becomes warm during the winter months. Many visitors come from the Gulf countries to see them. These springs help supply water to many farms through channels.

History is found all over this region. Researchers love to visit the many old monuments here. The King Abdulaziz Palace is a very important site. It was built in the Al-Saih City center between 1940 and 1941. There is also the Abu Jafan Palace near Al-Saih. It was built for pilgrims traveling to Mecca. The town of Yamama is one of the oldest towns in the area. People found old pottery and silver jewelry there from long ago.

Al-Kharj is a very strong place for farming and industry. It produces more than 26 percent of the vegetables in the Kingdom. It is also the leader in milk production. The area makes over 65 percent of the milk in Saudi Arabia. Many big dairy companies like Almarai work here. In 2008, the area held its first dairy festival. This was the first festival of its kind in the Persian Gulf. The city also has important places like the Prince Sultan Air Base.

Traveling through Al-Kharj is easy because it is a crossroads. A highway connects the city to Riyadh and was built in 1980. This path links the capital to the south and to Yemen. Other roads connect the area to Qatar and the United Arab Emirates. There is even a railway that runs from Riyadh to the eastern region. The city of Al-Saih has a station for freight trains. This helps move goods to a dry port for trade.
