geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Al-Jouf is a special province in northern Saudi Arabia. It sits near the western border of Jordan. The name Al-Jouf describes a type of land. It means land that has widened into a broad cavity. This area is very different from much of the country. While much of Saudi Arabia is dry, Al-Jouf is fertile. It has good soil and plenty of groundwater. A moderate climate also helps plants grow well there.

Because of its water and soil, Al-Jouf is a farming leader. The area near the town of Tabarjal is very important. People call it a national breadbasket because of its many crops. The province is most famous for its olive trees. It produces about 67% of all the olive oil in Saudi Arabia. You can also find many palm trees growing here. These trees produce around 150,000 tons of dates every year.

People have lived in this region for a very long time. Experts found stone tools from the Stone Age there. In the fourth millennium BC, people used pottery in the area. Later, the kingdom of Qidar lived here. They fought against the Assyrian state to stay independent. The first mentions of Arabs appear in historical records from this time. Al-Jouf was also a key stop on the Incense Road.

History in Al-Jouf was often filled with many different rulers. The Assyrians fought the Qedarite kings for a long time. One queen named Samsi even rebelled against the Assyrian king. Later, the Nabataean Kingdom took control of the local trade. After the Romans arrived, the region became part of Arabia Petraea. Eventually, the area saw the arrival of Islam. This changed the culture and the people living there.

Today, Al-Jouf remains a vital part of the country. It has changed hands between many tribes and empires. The Tayy tribe once ruled the area for a long time. In 1932, it became part of the third Saudi state. Now, it is known for its green fields and food. It connects the history of the ancient world to modern life. Visitors can see how much the land provides for its people.
