geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Al-Jouf is a province in the north of Saudi Arabia. It sits near the border of Jordan. The name Al-Jouf means land that has a wide, low cavity. This area is very special because it is very fertile. Most of Saudi Arabia is dry, but Al-Jouf has plenty of water. It has good soil and a mild climate. This makes it a great place for farms.

People have lived in Al-Jouf for a very long time. Experts found stone tools from the Stone Age there. In the past, the kingdom of Qidar lived in this region. They fought against the Assyrian state to stay free. Long ago, the area was part of the famous Incense Road.

Today, Al-Jouf is famous for growing food. The town of Tabarjal is like a breadbasket for the country. It grows many different crops. The province is famous for olive trees. It makes about 67% of all the olive oil in Saudi Arabia. There are also many palm trees. These trees grow about 150,000 tons of dates every year.
