He lived a long time ago in Basra. His family was very poor when he was young. He even sold fish to help them. But he loved to learn. He spent many years studying many subjects.

He wrote nearly two hundred books. One famous book is called The Book of Animals. In this book, he describes many different animals. He wrote about how they live and eat. He noticed how animals depend on each other to stay alive. This idea is like what we call an ecosystem today. He used the idea of a web to show how nature is all linked.

Al-Jahiz also wrote funny stories. His book The Book of Misers tells stories about greedy people. These stories use a clever style of writing. He was a very busy man. He worked as a teacher and a scribe. He even moved to the city of Baghdad. There, he lived near big libraries. He loved to read every book he could find. Some say he died when a large pile of books fell on him.
