An afro is a large and rounded hairstyle.

It can look like a soft cloud or a puff ball. People create this look by combing hair away from the scalp. This helps create a distinctive curl pattern. For those with wavy or straight hair, special creams or gels can hold the hair in place.

Many people use a wide-toothed comb called an afro pick. This tool helps shape the hair into its iconic form. This hairstyle is often called a natural hairstyle because it celebrates natural curls.

To make an afro, you must understand how the hair moves. Afro-textured hair has tight kinks and a coarse feel.

As this hair grows, it tends to extend outward from the head. This natural growth makes it easy to mold into a dome shape. Some people even use a method called backcombing to add more volume. However, this can sometimes damage the hair or the scalp. Many people find the afro easier to maintain than other styles. It does not always require frequent visits to a professional stylist.

History shows how much hairstyles can change over time. Before the 1960s, many African Americans tried to mimic white beauty standards. This often meant using harsh chemicals called relaxers to straighten hair. These substances could be dangerous and might burn the scalp. During the 1960s and 1970s, things began to change. The Civil Rights Movement brought a new sense of identity. The "Black is beautiful" movement encouraged people to embrace their natural hair. This made the afro a powerful symbol of Black pride and heritage.

Many famous people helped make the afro a global icon.

Activist Angela Davis and singer Jimi Hendrix were well known for their hair. The Jackson 5 and the Supremes also wore the style.

In the 1990s and 2000s, the style saw a new resurgence. Basketball players like Kobe Bryant and musicians like Beyoncé have worn versions of it. Even more amazing is the scale some people can achieve. In 2022, Adiva Dugas set a Guinness World Record. Her afro was 165 cm around and 25 cm tall.

Afros also appear in many different ways around the world. Some Jewish people have worn a similar style called a "Jewfro."

In Africa, different groups have their own unique traditions. In Somalia, young men might use ghee to hold their hair in place. In the past, some nations even banned the style because of its political meaning. Today, the style is more protected by law. In 2019, California passed the CROWN Act to stop hair discrimination. This law helps ensure people can wear their natural hair with pride.
