It is a very important tool for many people to talk to each other. Many use it as a second language alongside their own local tongues. This way of speaking is called a lingua franca. It helps people from different groups communicate. About 167 million people use it across 34 different countries and territories. This makes Africa the continent with the most French speakers in the whole world.

People use French in many different ways depending on where they live. In 18 countries, it is an official language. This means it is used for important things like school or laws. In places like the Democratic Republic of Congo, it is used alongside four national languages. These are Ciluba, Kikongo, Lingala, and Swahili. Some people use a mix of languages in one conversation. This is called code-switching. In Senegal, people might mix French with Wolof. This mix is sometimes called "franlof."

History has shaped how French is used in Africa today. Much of this comes from the colonial period. For example, the Democratic Republic of Congo was once a colony of Belgium. Because of this, many people there still speak French. In Angola, French is spoken especially in the northern region of Cabinda. This is because of the country's history and its neighbors. Some countries have even changed their official rules recently. Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger removed French as an official language in 2023, 2024, and 2025.

There are many specific styles of African French to notice. One style is called Français populaire africain, or FPA. It is used in many cities like Abidjan, Dakar, and Lomé. FPA uses many metaphors and images from local African languages. For instance, someone might say they are "dying" to show they love someone. In Abidjan, there is also a slang called Nouchi. It started with uneducated youth but grew into a creole language. This means it has its own special grammar.

Even the sounds of the words can be different from standard French. Some speakers use a different sound for the letter "r." Instead of the standard sound, they might use a trill. In North Africa, many people are bilingual. They speak both Arabic and French. This helps them in business, media, and school. Whether it is formal or slang, African French is a living part of daily life. It connects millions of people across many different lands and cultures.
