He was famous for his drawings, etchings, and paintings. Many people call him a Realist artist. This means he wanted to show the world exactly as it looked. He did not try to make things look perfect or magical. Instead, he focused on honest workmanship and keen observation. He was one of the most successful artists in Germany during his time.

Menzel had a very careful way of working on his art. He did deep research to make sure every detail was correct. If he painted a uniform, he measured the buttons perfectly. He also spent a lot of time studying how to draw. He started by drawing from plaster casts and old sculptures. Later, he taught himself how to paint. He even used a technique called wood-engraving to make many drawings. This helped his art reach many different people.

His journey began in a place called Breslau. He was born there on December 8, 1815. His father worked with lithography, which is a way of printing. In 1830, the family moved to the city of Berlin. After his father died, Menzel had to run the family business. He studied briefly at the Berlin Academy of Art in 1833. After that, he spent most of his life living in Berlin. He traveled to find new things to paint and meet other artists.

Menzel is well known for his many different types of work. He painted many scenes about King Frederick the Great. These history paintings made him very famous in his country. He also painted scenes of everyday life, like "The Ball Supper." One of his most famous large paintings is "The Iron Rolling Mill."

He was so respected that he became a knight in 1898. This changed his name to Adolph von Menzel.

Even though Menzel was a famous man, he was often very private. He said he felt a lack of bonds with the outside world. He was also a shorter man, standing about four feet six inches tall.

This might have made him feel a bit separate from others. However, other great artists like Edgar Degas admired his skill very much. Today, many of his paintings are kept safely in museums in Berlin. His life and his art continue to be studied by people everywhere.
