Adobe Flash was a very important tool for the internet.

It was a platform used to create many digital things. People used it to make animations and video games. It also helped build apps for phones and computers. Many big companies used it for their websites. Brands like Nike, Disney, and Motorola used Flash. Even the World Wildlife Fund used it to share content. It was a huge part of how the web looked and worked for a long time.

Flash worked by using different types of graphics and code. It could show text and vector graphics to make smooth shapes. It also used raster graphics for detailed images.

To make things move, it used a special language called ActionScript. This language let creators make interactive experiences. Users could click a mouse or use a keyboard to play. It could even capture input from a microphone or a camera. This allowed for things like online games and rich web applications.

The history of Flash began with a program called SmartSketch. This was made in 1993 by FutureWave Software. Three people founded the company: Charlie Jackson, Jonathan Gay, and Michelle Alsip-Welsh. In 1995, they added animation features to create FutureSplash Animator. Macromedia bought FutureSplash in December 1996. They renamed the product Macromedia Flash 1.0. This new version had two parts: an editor and a player. The player was a free plugin that helped it become very popular.

Flash grew very fast during the early 2000s. By 2005, more computers had Flash Player than other media formats. It was used by YouTube to show videos to people. In 2000, Flash 5 introduced the first major version of ActionScript. Later, Macromedia released Flash 8, which added cool filters like blur and drop shadows. Many people played games on sites like Newgrounds and Kongregate. Popular games like Club Penguin and Farmville were made using this technology. Even Speedtest.net used Flash for over 9 billion tests.

Eventually, the way we use the internet began to change. In 2010, Steve Jobs wrote a letter about Apple devices. He said he would not use Flash on iOS because of security flaws. This meant Flash started to decline. People began moving toward a newer way called HTML5. Adobe began focusing more on a platform called Adobe AIR. The Flash Player was officially stopped for most users at the end of 2020. Today, Adobe makes a tool called Adobe Animate to help people create new things.
