An adhesive bandage is a small medical tool.

It helps treat minor injuries. These injuries are not serious enough for a full bandage. People call them many names. In British English, they are called a sticking plaster or a medical plaster.

Some people use the name Band-Aid. This name is a trademark. You might also hear the name Elastoplast in the UK. These small tools are very useful for first aid.

A bandage works in a few ways. First, it protects a wound from dirt and bacteria. It also stops friction from rubbing the skin. This helps the body heal without being disturbed. Some bandages even have antiseptic properties to help. They can also hold the edges of a cut together. This makes the healing process go faster.

The bandage stays in place because it is sticky.

The design of a bandage is quite clever. It is a small and flexible sheet. One side of the sheet is sticky. The middle has a soft, absorbent pad. This pad is not sticky at all. You place the pad directly against the wound. Then, you smooth the sticky edges onto the skin.

Most come in a sterile bag. This means they are very clean. You must remove a backing before you use it.

Many different materials make these bandages. The sticky part is often an acrylate. The sheet can be made of fabric or plastic. Some are made of latex or polyethylene.

Some bandages are even waterproof. These are called occlusive dressings if they are airtight. There are also special kinds called butterfly closures. These are thin strips used to pull skin edges together. They can sometimes be used instead of real stitches.

Bandages come in many colors and shapes. Many children like ones with cartoon characters. Some workers use blue bandages for safety. Blue is easy to see if it falls into food. Some of these even have a metal strip. This helps machines find them in food factories.

Some people want more skin tone options. This helps the bandage look less obvious on darker skin. This is a change many people support now.
