It helps protect a wound from dirt and bacteria. Bacteria are tiny germs that can cause harm. The bandage also stops friction from rubbing the skin.

This helps your body heal without being disturbed.

A bandage has a few main parts. It is a small and flexible sheet. One side is sticky. The middle has a soft, absorbent pad. This pad is not sticky. You place the pad on the wound. Then you smooth the sticky edges onto your skin.

Most bandages come in a sterile bag. This means they are very clean. You must remove a backing before you use it.

Some bandages are special. Butterfly closures are thin strips. They pull the edges of a cut together. They can be used instead of real stitches. Other bandages help move medicine through the skin. These are called transdermal patches. Some workers use blue bandages. Blue is easy to see in food. This keeps food safe to eat.
