A dressing is a piece of material for a wound. It touches the wound directly. This is different from a bandage. A bandage usually holds a dressing in place.

Dressings help the body heal in many ways. They can stop bleeding by helping the blood clot. They also soak up fluids like blood or plasma. This is called exudate.

Keeping this fluid in one place helps the skin stay healthy.

Many dressings are sterile. This means they are very clean and free of germs. Being clean helps prevent an infection. Some dressings even have medicine in them. They might use silver or honey to fight germs. Others use medicine to ease pain.
