The Kaurna people called the city area Tarndanyangga, Tandanya, or Tarntanya. This name means "male red kangaroo rock." It referred to a rock formation that is now gone. The Kaurna lived in more than 20 local clans. They were semi-nomadic and used extensive mound settlements. They lived in huts that were built repeatedly over many centuries. They also called the River Torrens the Karrawirra Pari. This name means "red gum forest river."

Adelaide was founded in 1836 as a planned capital. It was established for the only freely settled British province in Australia. This made it different from other Australian penal colonies. The city was named for Adelaide of Saxe-Meiningen. She was the wife of King William IV.

Colonel William Light was a founding father. He was the first surveyor-general of South Australia. Light designed the city centre near the River Torrens. He used a grid layout called "Light's Vision." This plan included wide boulevards and large public squares. He also designed the city to be surrounded by park lands. This layout is now listed as national heritage.

Early colonial life faced many challenges. The colony was built on ideas from Edward Gibbon Wakefield. He wanted to create a colony of free immigrants. This system used land sales to fund the arrival of working-class emigrants. Because it was a free colony, there was no initial provision for a gaol. However, crime occurred early on. A murder and several attempted murders happened in March 1838. This led to the creation of the South Australian Police Force in April 1838. The first person to be hanged in South Australia was Michael Magee in May 1838.
