It is also the most populous non-capital city in the country. The urban area is concentrated along the coast and spans nearly 60 kilometres. This sprawl connects with the Greater Brisbane metropolitan region to the north and the New South Wales border to the south.

The geography of the region is defined by a narrow barrier sandbar. This strip of land sits between the Pacific Ocean and various inland waterways.

Much of the land between the coast and the hinterland was once comprised of wetlands. These swamps were eventually drained to create man-made canals. These residential waterways are extensive, stretching over 700 kilometres in total length. This is more than nine times the length of the canals found in Venice, Italy.

These canals often extend from the Nerang River or other local creeks. Today, over 80,000 residents live in these artificial waterfront estates.

To the west, the landscape rises into the Great Dividing Range. This elevated area is known as the Gold Coast hinterland.

A significant portion of this range is protected within the Lamington National Park. This park is a World Heritage area due to its unique geological features. It contains shield volcanic craters and many rare or threatened rainforest species. The area is a vital habitat for the Black flying fox, a pollinating animal. These animals can often be heard foraging through the trees at night.

The history of the region began with the indigenous Yugambeh people. They included several clans, such as the Kombumerri, Mununjali, and Wangerriburra.

European exploration occurred in 1823 when John Oxley explored the Tweed River. Later, the timber industry attracted settlers to the hinterland during the mid-19th century. The western suburb of Nerang was established as an industrial base in 1865.

Small settlements like Southport grew as secluded holiday spots for wealthy residents from Brisbane.

Tourism transformed the local economy throughout the 20th century. Between 1914 and 1946, many "seaside shacks" appeared along the South Coast.

These modest holiday homes were often built using recycled materials. People used disused timber, metal containers, or even old trams to build them. The region was originally called the South Coast. However, rising real estate prices led to the nickname "Gold Coast" around 1950. The Town of South Coast was officially renamed the Town of Gold Coast in 1958. It was proclaimed a city just one year later, in May 1959.

Modern development has shaped the skyline seen today.

A major boom occurred in the 1980s with the construction of many skyscrapers. This era involved developers known as the "white-shoe brigade" and was marked by neon lights. In the early 21st century, the city became a global destination for film production. This industry is so central to the region that it is often called "Goldywood." The city also hosts major events, such as the 2018 Commonwealth Games. The local economy is now diverse, with a GDP of AU$49.3 billion as of 2024.

The Gold Coast is a major hub for various creative and economic sectors. It is a leading destination for tourism, health, and construction.

From its surfing beaches to its film studios, the city remains a vital part of the Australian landscape.
