As a gateway to significant natural wonders, Cairns serves as a vital hub for the region. It provides access to two UNESCO World Heritage sites. These are the Daintree Rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef. The reef is considered one of the seven natural wonders of the world.

The geography of the area is defined by its tropical environment. The city has a linear urban layout. It stretches from Edmonton in the south to Ellis Beach in the north. Many suburbs are located on flood plains. The Mulgrave River and the Barron River flow within the greater Cairns area. The city centre foreshore sits on a mud flat.

Long before British settlement, the Gimuy Walubara Yidinji people inhabited this land. They still claim their native title rights today. The local Yidiny language names the area Gimuy. The Yidinji language is spoken in several localities. These include Cairns, Gordonvale, and the Mulgrave River.

European presence began in the late 1860s with beche de mer fishermen. A violent confrontation occurred in 1872 over a native well. This led the area to be called Battle Camp. In 1876, official expeditions looked for a port to export gold. The gold was mined from the Hodgkinson goldfields on the tablelands. The settlement was eventually named Cairns after Sir William Wellington Cairns. He was the Governor of Queensland at the time.

Agriculture became a dominant industry in the late 19th century. This growth was driven by Chinese immigrants. These settlers experimented with crops like cotton, tobacco, coffee, and sugar.

By 1886, the Chinese population accounted for 60% of all farmers. They also made up 90% of the gardeners. A thriving Chinatown developed on Grafton Street. It was the largest Chinese community outside of Brisbane. This community was divided by place of origin. Most immigrants came from the Guangdong Province in China. However, changes in policy and social trends caused Chinatown to decline by the mid-20th century.

Infrastructure played a key role in the city's development. A railway was built to connect the coast to the mining centre of Herberton.

It supported the Allied Forces during the Battle of the Coral Sea in 1942. The military used the airport, a naval base, and the wharves.
