Adaptation is a very important part of how life works. It is the way living things change to fit their homes, or niches. Scientists use the word adaptation in three different ways. First, it is the moving process of natural selection that helps groups of living things fit their environments. Second, it describes the state a group reaches during that process. Third, it refers to a specific trait, like a body part, that helps an individual survive.

There are many ways these changes happen. Structural adaptations are physical features, such as a specific body shape or covering. Behavioral adaptations are ways of acting, like how an animal searches for food or makes sounds. Physiological adaptations are internal changes, such as making venom or regulating body temperature.

Sometimes, features even change their jobs over time. For example, the feathers that kept dinosaurs warm were later used by birds for flight.

People have studied this since ancient times. Greek philosophers like Empedocles and Aristotle talked about how life fits its surroundings. Later, people in natural theology thought adaptation was evidence of a creator. Jean-Baptiste Lamarck proposed that organisms became more complex by using certain body parts. However, Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace changed how we think about it. They showed that natural selection is the main engine behind these changes.

Many different things can happen in nature. Some species co-evolve, which means they change together to help each other. A good example is flowering plants and the insects that pollinate them.

Other animals use mimicry to stay safe. This is when one species evolves to look like another species that is well-defended, like a wasp.

Some animals are specialists that need one specific thing to live, like pandas needing bamboo. Others are generalists, like humans, that can live in many places.

It is helpful to know what adaptation is not. It is different from learning or acclimatization. Acclimatization is a change that happens during a single life, like humans making more red blood cells at high altitudes. Adaptation is a change that is passed down to the next generation. Scientists also look at fitness to see how well a trait helps a living thing reproduce.
