Predation

life science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Predation is a very important way that living things interact. In this relationship, one living thing is called the predator. The other living thing is called the prey. The predator kills and eats the prey to get energy.

This is different from scavenging, where an animal eats something already dead. It is also different from parasitism, where one thing lives on another. Some tiny animals are called micropredators because they feed on others without killing them.

To find food, a predator follows a specific way it works. This is called a foraging cycle. First, the predator must search for its prey. Some predators move a lot, like sharks or shrews. Others, like praying mantises, stay very still.

Next, the predator must assess the prey. It decides if the food is worth the effort. A lion might skip small prey to save energy. A mantid might avoid prey that is too big or too small.

Once a predator decides to strike, it uses a hunting strategy. Some use pursuit predation, which is an active chase. Others use ambush predation, which is a surprise attack from a hidden spot.

There is also ballistic interception. This is when a predator predicts where the prey will move. Then, it launches an attack to hit that path. Dragonflies are good at this kind of planning. Some frogs even wait for a snake to strike first. This helps them move quickly to escape.

Predation has been a major driver of evolution since the Cambrian period. This means it has shaped how life changes over very long times. This can lead to an evolutionary arms race. In this cycle, prey develop new ways to stay safe. They might use camouflage to hide or loud calls to warn others. Then, predators develop new ways to hunt.

This constant change helps life adapt to new challenges. It is a natural cycle that keeps ecosystems moving.

Many different types of life act as predators. We often think of big cats or birds. However, many insects like dragonflies and mantids are hunters too.

Even some plants are predators, like the Venus fly trap. These plants use traps and electrical impulses to catch insects. In the ocean, jellyfish and crabs are common predators. Even tiny single-celled organisms like ciliates hunt smaller microbes. Predation is found in almost every part of our world.
