Many traditions speak of a first man. This figure is often more than a person. He is a big idea about how the world began.

In Kabbalah, this is called Adam Kadmon. He is not the same as the first human on earth. Instead, he is made of pure divine light. He appeared after God's light moved to make space for the world. Some thinkers say he represents the very first stage of creation. He holds the plan for everything that will ever exist.

Other thinkers have similar ideas. A man named Philo spoke of a heavenly man. This man was a perfect idea rather than a body of clay. In some Gnostic groups, the first man is seen as a pure mind. This mind is separate from the physical world.

Other cultures have stories of a cosmic man too. In some myths, the parts of this man became the world. For example, his eyes might become the sun. These stories help people feel a link between humans and the universe. They show how big ideas can connect us to everything around us.
