Acherontia lachesis

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The greater death's head hawkmoth is a large moth.

Its wings can spread out to 13 cm. This moth lives in India and many parts of East Asia. It also lives on the Hawaiian Islands.

These moths love to eat honey. They can mimic the scent of honey bees. This way, they can enter a hive without being hurt. The moth has a stout, strong tongue. It uses this tongue to pierce wax cells. Then, it sucks out the honey.

When the moth is disturbed, it makes a squealing note. It raises its body and opens its wings. The caterpillar, or larva, is also very active. It can grow to 125 mm long. Many larvae are grey with stripes. They have a prickly tail horn. If a predator bothers them, they shake their heads. They also make a clicking noise with their mandibles, which are mouth parts. To grow, the larva pushes its head into the earth. It makes a small room about 15 cm below the ground. This is where it sheds its skin to change.
