This theory says the universe has no real meaning. People often search for a reason for everything. However, the world does not seem to give answers. This creates a big conflict.

Some people say this conflict is between humans and the world. Humans want meaning, but the world is irrational. Other thinkers say the conflict is inside us. We can see that life lacks a purpose. Yet, we still cannot stop caring about purpose.

This feeling can cause an existential crisis. That is a time of great worry or sadness. People might feel deep anxiety about life. There are different ways to respond to this. One way is to believe in a higher purpose. Another way is to use irony or humor. Many people suggest we should rebel. Rebellion means we recognize the conflict but keep living. Albert Camus is a famous name in this study. Søren Kierkegaard also wrote about these big ideas.
