She is of Puyuma descent, an indigenous group from eastern Taiwan. Because of her massive success, she is often called the "Queen of Mandopop." She is also known as the "Pride of Taiwan." A-Mei has become a major pop culture icon throughout the Sinophone world. This term refers to regions where Chinese is the primary language. Beyond her music, she is a prominent voice for gender equality and LGBT rights.

Her musical journey began in the Tamalakaw tribe in Beinan, Taitung.

Growing up in an impoverished family, she found joy in tribal music. Her mother would record herself singing and play the tapes for her daughters. As a child, A-Mei would organize village children to use flashlights as stage lighting. She was also a talented athlete and earned a second-degree black belt in taekwondo. In 1992, she moved to Taipei to seek new opportunities. She first entered the "Five Lights Singing Contest" in 1992 but lost the final round. Her father encouraged her to try again, and she won the championship in 1994.

After winning the contest, A-Mei began performing in local pubs with a rock band called "Relax."

Her talent caught the attention of producers Chang Yu-sheng and Chang Hsiao-yen. They signed her to Forward Music in March 1996. Her debut studio album, *Sisters*, was released in December 1996. Although some executives feared her indigenous heritage might hurt sales, A-Mei proudly embraced her identity. The album was a massive success, selling 1.21 million copies in Taiwan and four million copies in Asia. It even included Puyuma musical elements and a chorus of her own relatives.

Her second album, *Bad Boy*, was released in June 1997 and achieved even greater heights.

This record became the best-selling album in Taiwanese music history. It sold 1.38 million copies in Taiwan and over six million copies across Asia. The album produced several hits that are now considered modern-day classics. These include songs like "Listen to the Sea" and "Dancing Alone." Tragically, her manager Chang Yu-sheng died in a car crash in late 1997. A-Mei released the single "Listen to You, Listen to Me" as a tribute to him.

Throughout the late 1990s, A-Mei continued to break records with her performances.

In 1998, she launched her first solo concert tour. Her shows in Singapore were incredibly popular and sold out in record time. One concert sold out in just ten hours, while another sold out in eight. She also represented Taiwan at the "Asia Live Dream" ceremony in Japan. By 1999, she had won over 30 awards and her total album sales exceeded ten million. Her fame even led to major commercial endorsements, such as for Sprite.

Her career has been marked by both great triumphs and moments of resilience. In 2004, she faced a decline in sales due to cross-strait relations controversies. However, she achieved a strong resurgence in 2006 with her album *I Want Happiness?*. She has won the Golden Melody Award for Best Mandarin Female Singer three times. These wins were for her albums *Truth*, *Amit*, and *Faces of Paranoia*. To date, she has sold more than 50 million records. This makes her the best-selling female artist in the history of Taiwanese music.

Today, A-Mei is recognized as a global leader in the music industry.

In 2002, *Time* magazine named her one of the 20 most influential people in Asia. She was also included on the "Charity Heroes List" by *Forbes*. Her massive Utopia World Tour between 2015 and 2017 drew over 2.5 million attendees. Her life connects her indigenous roots to the global pop stage. She remains a symbol of strength, artistry, and cultural pride for many people.
