She is a major figure in the Chinese-speaking world. Many people call her a "diva" or the "heavenly queen." These titles reflect her massive success and talent. She is also known for her "cool" personality. Her musical style is unique because she blends alternative music with Chinese pop. This mixture helped her stand out from other artists. She has gained large followings in Japan and Southeast Asia as well.

Wong's career followed a complex path through different musical stages. She began by releasing low-cost cassette albums in high school. These early recordings were mostly covers of her idol, Teresa Teng. In 1987, she moved from Beijing to Hong Kong. This was a difficult transition because she did not speak Cantonese. She initially used the stage name Shirley Wong. During this period, she released albums like "Everything" and "You're the Only One." These early works often featured cover songs from the US and Japan.

A major turning point occurred when Wong moved to the United States. In 1991, she went to New York for professional training. She attended the Barbizon School and the Martha Graham School. This period of study helped shape her artistic direction. When she returned to Hong Kong, she adopted the name Faye. This name is a homophone of her Chinese name, Jing. Her 1992 album, "Coming Home," marked a new era. It introduced R&B influences and her first English-language song, "Kisses in the Wind."

Wong reached massive popularity through specific hit songs and television. Her song "Fragile Woman" became a breakthrough hit in 1992. This track was a Cantonese cover of a Japanese song. The song's success helped her build a massive career in Hong Kong. She also became a talented lyricist. In 1993, she wrote the Mandarin lyrics for the ballad "No Regrets." This song became the title track for her successful album. Her music continued to evolve with influences from Western alternative groups like the Cocteau Twins.

Her discography includes many different musical styles and languages. She recorded primarily in Cantonese during her early Hong Kong years. Later, she recorded mostly in her native Mandarin. Her Mandarin albums, such as "Mystery" and "Sky," helped her reach a wider audience. The song "I'm Willing" from the album "Mystery" became her trademark Mandopop song. She also experimented with different sounds in her album "Di-Dar." This album mixed an alternative yodelling style with Middle Eastern and Indian flavors.

By March of that year, she had sold an estimated 9.7 million albums. Her influence is also recognized by official polls. In 2009, she was voted the second most influential Chinese celebrity of the past 60 years. This poll was conducted by the State Council Information Office. She received seven million votes in that survey.
