433 Eros is a large, stony asteroid in space.

It is a near-Earth object, which means it passes close to our home. This asteroid has a very long shape, almost like a giant peanut. It is the second-largest object of its kind near Earth. Eros also crosses the path of the planet Mars. Scientists think it might even cross Earth's path in the future. This could happen in as little as two million years.

Learning about Eros is a way to see how space works. Because it is shaped like a peanut, its gravity is not the same everywhere. Gravity is the pull that keeps things on the ground. On Eros, the pull changes depending on where you stand. The daytime temperature can reach about 150 degrees Celsius. At night, it drops to about -20 degrees Celsius. The asteroid is also very dense. Its density is 2.67 grams per cubic centimeter, which is like the Earth's crust.

People first found Eros a long time ago. A German astronomer named C. G. Witt discovered it on August 13, 1898. He was working at the Berlin Observatory. Another astronomer named Auguste Charlois also found it at the Nice Observatory. It was the first minor planet to be given a male name. This name comes from Eros, a god in Greek mythology. He was the son of Aphrodite and is linked to Venus.

Many scientists have studied Eros using big tools. In 1900, a worldwide program measured its distance from the Sun. Charles D. Perrine took 965 photographs to help with this work. Later, a NASA spacecraft named NEAR Shoemaker visited the asteroid. It flew by Eros in 1998 and entered orbit in 2000. On February 12, 2001, the probe landed on the surface. This was the first time a spacecraft ever landed on a near-Earth asteroid.

Eros has a very interesting surface with many secrets. Scientists found 334 dust ponds on the asteroid. These are smooth, blue-colored spots where dust has gathered in low areas. Most of the large rocks on the surface came from one huge crash. This impact happened about one billion years ago. The crash may have even shaken smaller craters into rubble. Eros might also be a treasure chest in space. It could hold 20 billion tonnes of aluminum and metals like gold.
