It has an elongated shape, like a peanut. A man named C. G. Witt found it in 1898. He worked at the Berlin Observatory. Eros is named after a Greek god. It was the first asteroid to get a male name.

Eros flies near the planet Mars. It is also a near-Earth object. This means it comes close to our home. A spacecraft named NEAR Shoemaker visited it. The ship orbited the rock in the year 2000. It even landed on the surface in 2001.

The surface of Eros has many features. There are large craters, which are big holes. There are also dust ponds. These are smooth spots where dust has gathered in low areas. Scientists think a huge crash happened there long ago. This crash threw rocks across the surface. It may have even shaken smaller craters into rubble. Eros might also hold many metals. It could have 20 billion tonnes of aluminum. It may even have gold and platinum inside. Space is full of hidden treasures!
