In 1931, a massive flood hit China. It affected the Yangtze and Huai Rivers. Before this, China had a long drought. Then, a very cold winter brought much snow and ice. In early 1931, the snow melted. Heavy spring rains arrived at the same time. This caused the rivers to rise very high.

The water covered a huge area. It was as large as England and half of Scotland. Many cities like Wuhan and Nanjing were flooded. The water destroyed many homes and farms. This meant there was not enough food. Many people died from drowning, hunger, or sickness. One report said 2 million people died. Other studies say the number was even higher.

Many people worked to help. The government set up a relief group. They used experts to help the people. Even famous pilots like Charles Lindbergh helped. They flew over the flood zones to study them. People from other countries sent money and food. Later, leaders worked to build dams to stop more floods.
