A zombie is a legendary figure known as an undead being. This creature is often described as a corpse brought back to life.

While we see them in many movies today, the idea began much earlier. In Haitian folklore, a zombie is a dead body reanimated by magic. A sorcerer known as a bokor uses witchcraft to do this. These zombies have no will of their own. They must serve the bokor as personal slaves.

There are different ways people imagine zombies being made. In traditional Haitian stories, magic is the main cause. However, modern stories often use science fiction ideas. Some stories suggest that fungi, radiation, or gases cause the change. Other versions use bacteria or viruses to explain the undead.

This shift changed how the creatures act in stories. Modern zombies are often seen as people who attack others. They are sometimes described as wanting to eat human flesh.

History shows how the word and the idea grew. The term zombie likely comes from Bantu languages like Kimbundu. One of the first books to share these ideas was The Magic Island by W. B. Seabrook in 1929. Later, filmmaker George A. Romero changed everything with his 1968 film, Night of the Living Dead. Interestingly, his original scripts called the creatures "ghouls" instead of zombies. It was actually film critics who began using the word zombie for his characters. Romero eventually accepted this new name for his undead monsters.

Zombies have appeared in many different types of media over the years. In the mid-1990s, video games like Resident Evil became very famous. These games helped start a new wave of zombie stories. We also see the "zombie apocalypse" idea in many places now. This is a story where the whole world is taken over by zombies. One famous example is The Walking Dead franchise.

Some stories even show zombies as friends or even romantic interests. This can be seen in movies like Warm Bodies.

These stories often connect to real human feelings and history. Some thinkers believe the modern zombie idea was influenced by the history of slavery in Haiti. In some cultures, stories of zombies were used to talk about difficult social issues. Today, seeing zombies as friends can be a metaphor. It might represent how people fight for equality or break social rules. Whether they are magical or scientific, zombies remain a huge part of our culture. They help us explore big questions about life and society.
