The zebra mussel is a tiny animal that lives in fresh water.

It gets its name from stripes on its shell. These shells are often the size of a fingernail. They use strong threads called byssal fibres to stick to rocks or sand.

These mussels are filter feeders. This means they eat by pulling tiny bits from the water. One mussel can clean up to one liter of water each day. This makes the water very clear.

Clear water lets sunlight reach deep into the lake. This helps green plants grow on the bottom. When these plants die, they wash up on beaches.

Zebra mussels can be a problem. They are an invasive species. This means they move to new places and cause trouble. They often grow in large groups on native clams. This can kill the local clams. They also stick to pipes in water plants. This can clog the pipes and cost a lot of money.

Many birds and fish eat them, but they can still spread very fast.
