It is the biggest island in the country. Many people live there. In 2020, over two million people called it home. This is 40% of all people in Denmark.

Many bridges and tunnels link Zealand to other places. You can cross a bridge to reach the island of Amager. From there, you can reach Sweden. To the west, a link connects it to the island of Funen. In the south, bridges connect it to the islands of Falster and Lolland.

The capital city, Copenhagen, sits on the eastern coast. It is a very big city. Other towns like Roskilde and Helsingør are also on the island.

Old stories tell of how the island began. Norse myths say a goddess named Gefjun made it. She took a piece of land from Sweden. She moved it to Denmark to make Zealand. The empty space left in Sweden became a lake. Some people think the island looks like a piece of land moved by a goddess.
