Zayd ibn Thabit was a very important person in early Islamic history. He was a scribe for the prophet Muhammad. A scribe is someone who writes things down carefully. Zayd was part of a group called the Ansar, which means "helpers." He was a member of the Banu Najjar family.

He was known for being a very smart and dedicated man. He even joined the Muslim army when he was 19 years old.

Zayd had many special jobs to help the community. He was a great expert on the Quran. He spent much of his time reciting the holy verses. Muhammad also asked him to learn new languages. Zayd was very fast at learning. He mastered Hebrew in just two weeks. He also learned Persian, Coptic, and Greek.

This helped him work as an interpreter for Muhammad.

After Muhammad passed away in 632, Zayd had a very big task. The leader Abu Bakr wanted to collect the Quran into one single volume. This was important because many people had memorized the verses. During the Battle of Yamamah, about 360 people who knew the Quran by heart died.

Zayd led a committee to gather all the verses. Some sources say the committee had 25 people. Other sources say there were 75 people. He collected words from parchment and date palm stalks. He also gathered them from the memories of men.

Later, the leader Uthman needed help again. Islam was spreading to many new places. People were starting to use different dialects, or ways of speaking, to read the Quran. This caused some differences in how the book was read.

Uthman asked Zayd to lead a group to make standard copies. They used the style of the Quraish tribe for these copies. Zayd and his team, including Ubayy ibn Ka'b, prepared five copies. These copies helped everyone read the text in the same way.

This stopped the different ways of speaking from causing confusion.

Zayd was a top authority on the Quran for a long time. People in Medina would go to him with questions. He even served as a judge in the city of Medina. Zayd lived a long life of service to his faith. He died in Medina in the year 665.

When he died, people felt that a great deal of knowledge had left the world. His work helped keep the Quran together for many people to read.
