He was a companion of the prophet Muhammad. This means he lived and learned alongside him. He was known for his great knowledge of the Quran. The Quran is the holy book for Muslims. Many people saw him as a wise sage. He was a leader for the early Muslim community. His life shows how much people valued learning about their faith.

Before he became a teacher, Abu al-Darda had a different life. Some traditions say he worked as a merchant. A merchant is someone who buys and sells goods. Later, he left business to focus on religious duties. He became a very devoted and holy person. He spent much of his time on his faith. This change helped him become a great expert. He focused on being a person of deep prayer.

His journey began in a place called Yathrib. This city later became known as Medina. Abu al-Darda belonged to the Khazraj tribe. He joined the Muslims after the Battle of Badr in 624. He may have also been at the Battle of Uhud in 627. The prophet Muhammad made him a "brother" to Salman al-Farisi. This was a special bond between the different groups of Muslims. It helped bring the community together.

Abu al-Darda was a rare expert on the Quran. He actually collected many revelations while Muhammad was still alive. Because of this, he was asked to help lead. The governor of Syria, Mu'awiya ibn Abi Sufyan, made him a qadi. A qadi is a judge who helps people follow the law. He was the very first qadi of Damascus. He taught his students at the city's mosque.
