Sometimes, protecting history can be very difficult and sad. In January 2011, during protests in Egypt, people broke into the Egyptian Museum in Cairo. Hawass found that thieves had damaged many old objects. They broke seventy items, including sculptures of King Tutankhamun. Some small statues and two skulls were also taken. Hawass worked hard to help restore the broken pieces. He also worked to make sure that looted objects were returned to Egypt.
