This location makes it a vital transport hub for Europe. It connects Central Europe, the Mediterranean, and Southeast Europe. The city acts as a center for road, rail, and air networks.

The geography of Zagreb is quite diverse. Most city districts lie at a low elevation in the Sava river valley. However, northern and northeastern districts like Podsljeme and Sesvete spread across the Medvednica foothills.

This creates a landscape of both flat valleys and rising hills. The city spans about 30 km from east to west. It stretches about 20 km from north to south. This varied terrain gives the city a unique geographical image.

Zagreb's history involves two separate settlements that eventually merged. In 1094, the city existed as two distinct centers. The first was Kaptol, an eastern settlement inhabited mainly by clergy. It housed the Zagreb Cathedral. The second was Gradec, a larger western settlement for merchants and craftsmen.

These two towns often had conflicts over property and rent collection. These disputes lasted from the middle of the 13th century until 1667. Eventually, Gradec and Kaptol were united into one settlement in 1850. Janko Kamauf became the first mayor in 1851.

The name "Zagreb" has several possible origins. The first historical record of the name is from 1134. Some linguists believe it comes from a Proto-Slavic word meaning "hill" or "uplift." Others suggest it relates to the Old Slavic word "breg," meaning "riverbank." This might refer to the nearby Sava river. Another theory suggests the name means "embankment" or "rampart." This could refer to ancient fortifications on the Grič hill. There are also folk legends about the name. One legend tells of a girl named Manda being told to "scoop" water.

The city has grown significantly through different eras. In 1242, King Béla IV granted Gradec the Golden Bull. This gave the citizens autonomy and their own judicial system. In the 17th century, the Jesuits arrived and built a grammar school. This school was the forerunner of the University of Zagreb. The 19th century brought major changes like the first railway in 1862. An electric-power plant was built in 1907. Following an earthquake in 1880, the city developed its modern layout. This layout includes many imposing buildings and parks.

Today, Zagreb is a major global city with a 'Beta-' rating.
