This high location made it a key point for travelers. It served as a vital gateway for movement across the land.

This pass was a major part of the Silk Road. The Silk Road was a famous network for trade. It connected East Asia with Central Asia. People often called Central Asia the Western Regions. Yumen Pass was the main road between these two areas.

It allowed goods and ideas to move through the region. Without this pass, the connection between these lands would have been different.

The name of the pass comes from Chinese words. The word "guan" means a frontier pass. This is different from a regular mountain pass. "Yu" means jade. The word "men" means gate or door. Therefore, Yumen Pass is the Jade Gate.

There is also a pass called Yangguan nearby. It is located just to the south. "Yang" means the sunny side or the south side of a hill.

History shows that the Han dynasty used this pass. The Han dynasty lasted from 202 BC to AD 220. During the Early Han period, leaders built a defensive line. This line started from Jiuquan, also called Wine Springs. It stretched west to the Jade Gate Pass.

This line helped protect the edge of Chinese territory. It was a very famous way to manage the north and west borders.

It is important to distinguish this pass from other places. There is a city in Gansu called Yumen. The name literally means Jade Gate as well. However, the pass is not the same as the city. Both are in the Jiuquan prefecture-level city. This is a large administrative unit in Gansu.

The pass is located some distance to the west of the city.

Today, the pass is recognized as a global treasure. In 2014, UNESCO added it to the World Heritage List. It is part of a larger site. This site is the Silk Roads: the Routes Network of Chang'an-Tianshan Corridor.
