She is best known for being the first woman to serve as the Prime Minister of Ukraine. She held this high office during two separate periods: from January 2005 to September 2005, and again from December 2007 to March 2010. Tymoshenko has also served several terms as a People's Deputy in the Verkhovna Rada, which is Ukraine's parliament. As the leader of the Batkivshchyna political party, she has shaped much of the nation's modern political landscape. Her career has been defined by her work in energy economics and her leadership during major social movements.

Tymoshenko's professional path began with a deep focus on economic systems. She graduated from the Dnipropetrovsk State University in 1984 with honors as an engineer-economist.

Later, in 1999, she earned a Ph.D. in economics from the Kyiv National Economic University. Her doctoral dissertation focused on the state regulation of the tax system. Before entering politics, she built a significant career in the private energy sector. She served as the president of United Energy Systems of Ukraine (UESU). This company acted as a middleman to import Russian natural gas into Ukraine. During her leadership from 1995 to 1997, she claimed to have helped pay off Ukraine's multi-billion dollar debt for gas.

Her transition from business to government involved several distinct stages of influence. In 1996, she entered the Verkhovna Rada after winning a seat with 92.3% of the vote. She became a central figure in the parliament and chaired the Budget Committee. In 1999, she founded the All-Ukrainian Union "Fatherland" faction to protest political methods used by other leaders. From 1999 to 2001, she served as the First Deputy Prime Minister for the fuel and energy complex. In this role, she implemented reforms to the electricity market. She required industrial customers to pay for electricity in cash rather than through barter. These changes helped the government collect billions of hryvna for social payments and civil servant salaries.

Tymoshenko played a vital role in the Orange Revolution in 2004. She co-led this massive protest movement that sought political change in Ukraine. Her influence during this time was recognized globally. In 2005, Forbes magazine ranked her third on its list of the world's most powerful women.

Following the revolution, she was appointed Prime Minister for the first time. However, her political career faced intense challenges during the presidency of Viktor Yanukovych. In the 2010 presidential election, she finished second in the runoff, losing to Yanukovych by 3.5 percentage points.

The period between 2011 and 2014 was a difficult chapter for Tymoshenko. She was detained for three years due to a criminal case. Many observers viewed this legal action as politically motivated persecution by the Yanukovych administration.

She remained in jail until the conclusion of the Revolution of Dignity. Following these events, she was rehabilitated by both the Supreme Court of Ukraine and the European Court of Human Rights. This legal clearance allowed her to return to active political life. She participated in the 2014 presidential election, finishing second to Petro Poroshenko.

In recent years, Tymoshenko has continued to contest national elections and lead the opposition. She ran in the 2019 presidential election, where she received 13.40% of the vote in the first round. While this prevented her from reaching the second round, she was re-elected to the Verkhovna Rada that same year. Her political platform remains focused on specific international goals for Ukraine. She strongly supports Ukraine's integration into the European Union. She also advocates for Ukraine to become a member of NATO. Conversely, she remains a firm opponent of Ukraine joining the Russia-led Eurasian Customs Union.

Tymoshenko's life connects the worlds of high-stakes energy commerce and national governance. Her career illustrates how economic expertise can transition into political power. The movement of natural gas through pipelines is a major factor in European energy security.

Her ability to manage these complex systems helped define Ukraine's market economy. Her journey through both high office and imprisonment reflects the intense political shifts in Eastern Europe. Through her party and her legislative work, she remains a central figure in the ongoing development of Ukrainian democracy.
