Many people call him one of the best portrait photographers of the 20th century. He often photographed people who were very important to the world. He believed that the people who make the world go around are a special minority. Because of his talent, more than 20 of his photos appeared on the cover of Life magazine. He was often called "Karsh of Ottawa" as his professional signature.

Karsh had a very specific way of working. He used dramatic lighting to make his photos look powerful.

Before he took a photo, he would research his subjects. He would talk to them to make them feel comfortable. He also liked to use props. These were objects that helped tell a story about a person's job or life. He learned these skills using large-format cameras and glass plate negatives. He also spent a lot of time working in a darkroom to print his pictures.

His journey to becoming a master was not easy. Karsh was born in 1908 in the Ottoman Empire. He survived the Armenian genocide, which was a very difficult time for his people. In 1923, when he was fifteen, he moved to Canada as a refugee. He arrived in Halifax, Nova Scotia, by ship. He went to live with his uncle, George Nakashian, in Quebec. His uncle was a portrait photographer who taught him the basics of the craft. Karsh even used a Box Brownie camera to practice his skills.

One of his most famous moments happened in 1941. He took a photo of the British Prime Minister, Winston Churchill.

The photo is called "The Roaring Lion." It was taken in the Canadian Parliament in Ottawa. To get the perfect expression, Karsh actually snatched a cigar away from Churchill! This created a defiant and scowling look. This single image became an instant icon of Britain. It is now so famous that it appears on the Bank of England £5 note.

Throughout his long career, Karsh photographed almost everyone famous. He took pictures of stars like Audrey Hepburn and Walt Disney.
