Steve McCurry took this photo using a special type of film. He used a Nikon camera with a specific lens to capture the detail. The girl was a student in a school at a refugee camp. She was looking directly into the camera lens when the picture was taken. The photo was later cleaned up by artists in Georgia. This helped make the colors and details look very sharp. It appeared on the cover of National Geographic in June 1985.

For many years, the girl in the photo was a mystery. McCurry tried to find her several times during the 1990s. In 2002, a team traveled to Afghanistan to search for her. They found her in a remote area where she lived. She was about 30 years old at that time. A scientist used a tool to check her eyes to be sure. This tool is called iris recognition and it matched her perfectly.

Sharbat Gula was a child when her family fled her home. They left the Nangarhar Province because of a war. Her family walked across high mountains to reach Pakistan. They stayed at the Nasir Bagh refugee camp in 1984. Gula later said she was angry about the photo being shared. In her Pashtun culture, it is not common for women to show their faces to men. This caused some tension between her traditions and her global fame.
