Chahine loved movies even when he was a little boy. He grew up in the city of Alexandria, Egypt. At age eight, he used his allowance to buy a small 9.5mm film projector. He would gather children from his neighborhood to watch films. He was very determined to work in the film industry. He even spent hours in his room picturing himself in a cinema hall. Later, he moved to California to study theater. He was the top student in his class at the Pasadena Playhouse.

His life in Egypt helped shape the stories he told. His father was a lawyer who loved books. His father also taught him how to find landmarks in the desert. Chahine used these memories when he looked for places to film. He also remembered his brother, Alfred, who passed away. The eyes of his brother influenced how he chose his actors. Chahine often looked for male actors with eyes like Alfred's. These personal details made his movies feel very real and special.

Chahine directed many different kinds of films. He made a large movie called Saladin the Victorious in 1963.

This film was about a leader from the 12th century. He also made a famous movie called Cairo Station in 1958. Some of his movies were very important to Egyptian history. He made a series of four movies about his own life. These are called his autobiographical quartet. They include films like Alexandria... Why? and Alexandria... New York.

Chahine wanted his films to reach many different people. He said he made films for himself and his family first. Then he made them for his home city of Alexandria. He also made them for the whole country of Egypt. He was happy if people in the Arab world liked them. He was even happier if audiences from other countries watched them. His work helped connect Egyptian stories to the rest of the world.
