He is known as one of the best middle-order batsmen in Test cricket. A Test match is a long game that lasts several days. Younis was a very successful leader for his national team. He served as the captain for both Test and ODI cricket. Under his leadership, Pakistan won the 2009 World Twenty20 title. This was the first time the team won that specific trophy. He also helped the team win the 2012 Asia Cup.

As a batsman, Younis showed incredible skill and consistency. He is the only player in history to score a century in all 11 countries that host Test matches. A century means a player scores 100 runs in a single game.

He holds the record for the most runs scored by any Pakistani in Test cricket. He was also the third Pakistani player to score 300 runs in one innings. In 2017, he became the first Pakistani to reach 10,000 runs in Test cricket. This was a very fast achievement compared to other players.

Throughout his career, Younis played in many different parts of the world. He played county cricket in England for teams like Yorkshire and Surrey. In 2007, he made a huge score for Yorkshire against Hampshire. He scored 106 runs and then 202 runs in the same match. This made him the first Yorkshire player to score a century and a double century in one game. He also played in Australia for the Southern Redbacks in 2008. Even in the Indian Premier League, he was drafted to play for the Rajasthan Royals.

Life was often difficult for Younis outside of the cricket field. He dealt with the loss of several family members during his career. His father passed away in 2005 while he was in Australia. Later, his brothers Mohammed Sharif Khan and Farman Ali Khan died in car accidents. He also felt great sadness when his coach, Bob Woolmer, died in 2007. Younis saw Bob as a father figure. He even had to leave a cricket series in 2006 to go home to Mardan after his brother died.
