arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

A yo-yo is a classic toy. It has two disks and an axle. A string is looped around the axle. You hold the end of the string in your hand.

When you throw it, gravity makes it spin. The toy unwinds the string as it falls. You can then make it wind back up to your hand. One famous trick is called a sleeper. In this trick, the yo-yo spins at the end of the string. It stays there for a long time before returning.

Yo-yos are very old. Ancient Greeks used toys made of wood or clay. In the 1700s, people in England called them bandalores. In 1928, Pedro Flores made a new design. He used a looped string. This helped the yo-yo spin better. This made many new tricks possible.

Modern yo-yos often use ball bearings. These are tiny metal balls inside the toy. They help the yo-yo spin for a long time. Some can spin for over 30 minutes!
