It occupies a massive area of 24,115 square kilometers. The city sits along both sides of the Yangtze River. This location makes it a vital economic hub for western Hubei. It acts as an intermediary between the large cities of Wuhan and Chongqing. The city includes an urban area and vast surrounding countryside. It is divided into several administrative parts. These include five urban districts, three county-level cities, and several counties.

The geography of Yichang is defined by its relationship with water. The Yangtze River flows through the center of the prefecture. Many tributaries join the Yangtze here. These include the Qing River, the Xiang Xi, and the Huangbo Rivers. The Xiling Gorge is part of the famous Three Gorges. This gorge is the easternmost section of the Three Gorges on the Yangtze.

The urban area is split by the river. Districts like Xiling, Yiling, Wujiagang, and Xiaoting sit on the north bank. The Dianjun District is located on the south bank. This landscape creates a unique environment for both people and nature.

Climate plays a huge role in life in Yichang. The city has a humid subtropical climate, known as Cwa in the Köppen system. This means it has four distinct seasons. The winters are generally cool, damp, and overcast. The summers are hot and very humid. Most of the annual precipitation occurs between May and September. This heavy rainfall happens during the monsoon season. The city receives about 1,568 hours of bright sunshine every year. August is typically the sunniest month for the region.

Because of this climate, Yichang has a strong agricultural sector. The land sits where the western Hubei mountains meet the Jianghan Plains. This transition zone is perfect for growing specific crops. Citrus fruit and tea are the most important agricultural products. The demand for premium citrus is growing in the United States and the Middle East. In 2022, exported citrus sold for 6,700 yuan per ton. Tea production is also very high. In 2023, the total output of tea reached 119,200 tons. These industries help support the local economy.

Energy production is perhaps the most famous aspect of Yichang. The city is a global leader in hydropower. Hydropower is the process of using flowing water to create electricity. The Three Gorges Dam is the world's largest hydroelectric power station. It is located near Sandouping and Maoping.

This massive dam generates 111.80 billion kWh of electricity every year. Another major project is the Gezhouba Dam, located upstream from the city center. There are also many smaller dams on the Qing River. These projects provide a stable source of renewable energy.

History has shaped Yichang through many different eras. The area was historically known as Yiling. During the Warring States period in 278 BC, a general named Bai Qi set fire to Yiling. In 222 AD, the area was the site of the Battle of Yiling. The name was eventually changed to Yichang in 1735. In 1876, the city became a trading port under the Qing Guangxu Emperor. This happened after the Chefoo Convention was signed. During the Second Sino-Japanese War, Yichang served as a supply depot. In 1938, a massive evacuation took place. Businessman Lu Zuofu helped move 30,000 people and 100,000 tons of equipment upstream.

Today, Yichang is a center for tourism and modern transport. In 2023, about 79 million visitors came to the region. They visit the Three Gorges Dam Tourist Area and the Xiling Gorge. Some travelers visit the Huangling Temple to see the scenery.

The city is very well connected. It has the Yichang Sanxia International Airport in the Xiaoting District. High-speed trains connect the city to Chongqing and Chengdu via the Yiwan Railway. Many bridges, such as the Yiling Bridge, span the Yangtze.
