It is situated within the Hubei province. This gorge is the largest of the famous Three Gorges region. It also holds the position of being the easternmost gorge in that group. The gorge covers a vast stretch of the river landscape. It makes up nearly half of the entire Three Gorges area. This makes it a major geographic feature of the Yangtze River system.

The geography of the gorge spans several specific locations. It stretches from the village of Xiangxi down to the western suburbs of Yichang. The area includes Zigui County and the Yiling District. Xiangxi village sits in Zigui County at a specific point. This is where the stream of the same name flows into the Yangtze River. The village is positioned between the towns of Guizhou and Quyuan. The gorge defines much of this western Hubei landscape.

While we call it one large gorge, it is actually a collection of parts. Xiling Gorge is composed of four distinct smaller gorges. The first is known as the Precious Sword Gorge. The second is named the Horse Lung and Ox Liver Gorge. The third part is called the Soundless Bell Gorge. The final part is the Shadow Play Gorge. These four sections fit together to form the massive Xiling Gorge.

The name of this place has a very long history. It is named after Mt. Xiling, which is a peak at the eastern end. People have used this name since at least the Three Kingdoms period. We know this because the name was recorded in a geographical treatise. This ancient text is called the Shui Jing Zhu. This long history shows how important the gorge has been to people for centuries. The mountain peak remains a landmark for the region.

In the past, traveling through this gorge was a very difficult task. Before the construction of large dams, the river was quite dangerous. It was known as the most hazardous of the Three Gorges. Travelers had to face strong rapids in the water. They also had to deal with frightening whirlpools. These natural features made the river path unpredictable and scary.

Large engineering projects have changed the nature of the gorge. The Three Gorges Dam was built at a place called Sandouping. This location is in the middle of the Xiling Gorge. The Gezhouba Dam was also constructed in this area. These dams have fundamentally altered the river's behavior. They have turned the rushing river into a much calmer environment. This change has transformed the way the water moves through the canyon.

The depth of the water has changed significantly due to these dams. Before the dams were built, the water was much shallower. In some areas below the dam, the depth was quite low. Now, the water level has increased greatly. Throughout the length of the reservoir, the water is well over 100 meters deep.

This deep water allows for different types of river travel. It has changed the gorge from a place of rapids into a deep reservoir. The landscape is now defined by this massive volume of water.
