The Yellow Turban Rebellion was a huge uprising in ancient China. It happened during the late Eastern Han dynasty. At this time, the central government was very weak. Powerful men called eunuchs were abusing their control over Emperor Ling. They took wealth for themselves while the people suffered. Many farmers also faced floods from the Yellow River. These disasters and diseases made people feel the Emperor had lost his right to rule.

A group of Taoist followers helped lead the revolt. The movement was started by three brothers from Julu Commandery. Their names were Zhang Jue, Zhang Bao, and Zhang Liang. Zhang Jue was known as the "Great Teacher." He and his brothers were famous for healing the poor. They offered free care to many sick people. This helped them build a very large following of followers.

The rebels chose a special color for their movement. They wore yellow scarves or turbans on their heads. This color came from their belief in a new era. They believed yellow skies would mark a new time of peace. Zhang Jue planned a massive uprising across the empire. However, someone betrayed the secret plan before it could start. This forced the rebellion to begin early in March 184 AD.

This rebellion changed the course of Chinese history. The main fighting was suppressed by 185 AD. However, it took until 205 AD to stop all the resisting areas. The war made the imperial court even weaker. Regional military governors gained a lot of power during this time. This led to the era of warlords. Eventually, this period became known as the Three Kingdoms period. This story is also the start of a famous novel. That book is called the Romance of the Three Kingdoms.
