Huang Chao was a wealthy man from the Shandong region in China. His family had been salt smugglers for many generations. At that time, the Tang dynasty controlled the salt trade. This meant the government had a monopoly on selling it. Huang Chao used his family's wealth to gather many followers. He was very good at riding horses and using a bow. He was also skilled at writing and speaking.

In the mid-870s, Huang Chao joined a rebellion led by Wang Xianzhi. He fought against the Tang dynasty, which was losing its power. After splitting from Wang, Huang led his army south. His troops captured the city of Guangzhou. In 881, his army took the capital city of Chang'an. The Tang Emperor, Xizong, had to flee the city. Huang Chao then declared himself the emperor of a new state called Qi.

As emperor, Huang Chao made several big decisions. He named his wife, Lady Cao, as his empress. He also chose officials like Shang Rang to help him rule. He tried to keep some Tang officials in their jobs. He only removed the highest-ranking leaders. However, he was very harsh to those who did not submit to him. Many generals eventually returned to the Tang side.

Things changed for Huang Chao in 883. A general named Li Keyong joined the Tang forces. Li Keyong was a leader of the Shatuo people. His army defeated a massive force of 150,000 men. This loss forced Huang Chao to leave Chang'an. He fled east toward Yan Prefecture. He suffered many more defeats against former followers like Zhu Wen.

On July 13, 884, Huang Chao's life came to an end. Some records say his nephew, Lin Yan, killed him. Other stories say Huang Chao took his own life. There is even a legend that he escaped to become a monk. Regardless of how he died, his rebellion changed China forever. It permanently destroyed the power of the Tang dynasty. This led to a time of many new leaders and changes.
