As a young man, An Lushan was very talented. He knew how to speak six different languages. This skill helped him work as an interpreter in military markets. These markets were places where people traded silk for horses. He worked alongside a man named Shi Sugan, who became a close friend. Early in his career, An Lushan faced a hard time. He was caught stealing sheep in You Prefecture. A general named Zhang Shougui was going to punish him. However, An Lushan spoke so well that the general decided to spare him.

An Lushan rose through the ranks of the Tang army very quickly. He spent much of his time defending the northeastern frontier. He protected the empire from groups like the Khitans and the Xi. By the year 742, he was a military governor. This meant he had great power over a large area. He became very successful at gaining favor with the leaders in the capital. He visited the capital city, Chang'an, very often to see the Emperor. He even brought rare animals and jewels as gifts for the ruler.

Emperor Xuanzong grew to like An Lushan very much. The Emperor even treated him like a member of the family. An Lushan even became an adoptive son of the Emperor's favorite lady, Consort Yang Guifei. He used clever ways to stay in the Emperor's good graces. Once, he even joked about his own large belly to make the Emperor laugh. However, things began to change as other leaders grew worried. A general named Wang Zhongsi reported that An Lushan might be planning something secret. This created tension and rivalry between the powerful men in the empire.

In late 755, An Lushan started a massive revolt against the Tang government. He led his troops to capture the city of Luoyang. This city was the eastern capital of the empire. In early 756, he declared himself the emperor of a new dynasty called Yan. While his generals fought, An Lushan stayed in the Luoyang palace. His health began to fail during this time. He became very paranoid and violent toward others. In early 757, he was murdered by a man working in the palace. His rebellion led to a war that caused the deaths of millions of people.
