The Yamato period was a big time in Japan's history.

It began around the year 250. During this time, powerful clans ruled the land. These clans were large groups of families. They worked together to grow strong.

One famous part of this era is the Kofun period. This name comes from large burial mounds called kofun.

These mounds were built for the ruling class. Some were shaped like a keyhole. They could be over 400 meters long! People also made clay figures called haniwa to place near tombs.

New ideas and people arrived from China and Korea. They brought iron, books, and new ways to think. In 538, a new religion called Buddhism arrived. This changed many things. People stopped building the giant kofun mounds. This was because Buddhist beliefs changed how they thought about life.

Later, in the 7th century, Prince Shōtoku helped make new rules. These rules were based on models from China. This helped the Yamato government become even more organized.
